French Lavender / Toothed Lavender

Botanical Name: Lavandula dentata
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean region
Plant Type: Evergreen shrub

Overview

A classic Mediterranean lavender perfectly suited to Adelaide’s warm, dry climate, Lavandula dentata forms a soft, aromatic mound of grey-green foliage topped with long-lasting mauve-purple flower spikes. One of the most heat-tolerant and low-maintenance lavenders for SA, it flowers for much of the year—often from late winter through summer—with a naturally bushy, tidy form that responds well to light clipping. The finely toothed foliage is distinctly fragrant, releasing a clean, resinous lavender scent when brushed, and may develop slight silver or grey tints in dry or coastal conditions. Ideal for borders, hedging, coastal gardens, alfresco areas and waterwise Mediterranean plantings.

Key Features

  • Mature Size: 0.6–1.0 m H × 0.6–1.0 m W (naturally rounded, compact habit)
  • Growth Rate: 25-40 cm per year under good conditions
  • Foliage: Aromatic grey-green to silver-green leaves with soft toothed edges; stronger silver tints in heat, dryness or coastal winds
  • Flowers: Mauve-purple spikes with distinctive “rabbit-ear” bracts; blooms for an extended season—late winter through summer in SA, with autumn spot-flowering
  • Seasonal Interest: Evergreen silver foliage year-round, with an exceptionally long flowering window from late winter–summer; foliage colour subtly intensifies in dry periods
  • Wildlife Value: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators; valuable nectar source for home gardens
  • Tolerance: Heat-tolerant, drought-tolerant (once established), coastal-tolerant, wind-tolerant, and light frost hardy. Performs best in free-draining soils and dislikes waterlogging. Handles Adelaide’s reflective heat and sandy/alkaline soils extremely well
  • Planting Density: Low hedge or edging: 30–40 cm apart (≈2.5–3 plants per metre); Borders/mass planting: 45–60 cm apart
  • Pet Friendly: Use caution — like most lavenders, foliage contains aromatic oils that may be mildly toxic if eaten in large quantities. Low palatability; keep prunings away from pets

Where It Works Best

  • Sunlight: Full sun essential (6+ hours) for best flowering, fragrance and compact growth
  • Soil: Very well-drained sandy or loamy soil; raised beds and gravelly mixes ideal. Avoid heavy clay unless significantly improved
  • Water Needs: Establishment: 2 deep soaks/week for 8-12 weeks. Established: deep soak every 10-14 days in summer; little needed in winter
  • Maintenance: Shear lightly after major flowering flushes to maintain a neat dome and encourage repeated blooms. Avoid cutting into old wood. Light feed in early spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. Mulch with gravel or coarse organic mulch to reduce humidity at the crown
  • Lifespan: 5-10+ years in suitable, well-drained sites
  • Climate Zones: Suited to temperate and Mediterranean South Australian gardens, including coastal suburbs and inland heat zones
  • Soil pH: Prefers neutral to alkaline soils; tolerates slightly acidic soils if drainage is excellent

Landscape & Design Ideas

  • Low hedging along driveways and paths for a fragrant, Mediterranean look
  • Mass plant in gravel or dry gardens with rosemary, olives, and ornamental grasses
  • Grow in pots near alfresco areas to enjoy scent and long flowering close-up

Why You Will Love It

Beautifully fragrant, long-flowering and exceptionally heat-tolerant, Lavandula dentata is one of the most reliable lavenders for Adelaide. With its soft silver foliage and extended season of mauve blooms, it delivers colour, scent and structure with very little maintenance—perfect for modern, Mediterranean and coastal garden styles.

Quality product for the right dog...
Color: Orange
Honestly it's a really cool product well constructed and moves around on its own with several different modes. The design id brilliant with a tough rubber ball that unscrew to expose the element that makes it move in the middle. The dog won't be able to unscrew it but you can if you ever need to replace the ball for any reason but it would take some work for a dog to destroy the outer ball. Almost like "Kong" type material. The ball is about the size of a softball and the element inside is about the size of a golf ball. I thought my dog would love this but she was afraid of it, which is strange because she's afraid of nothing. Anyways I gave it to my neighbor upstairs and she has a yorkshire terrier who plays with it all the time so it all worked out great. Quality product . Good job!

Thought it was a good idea but not for my dog

Seemed great but my dog continued to bark at it. Finally she hid it and I haven’t looked for it.

Durability
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
won’t give this product 1 star because my dog still had a good time with it for a few hours. After opening and preparing it, I gave it to my dog and it definitely caught his interest. However, when he chewed on it, plastic pieces started breaking off and he began swallowing them. This product is definitely not suitable for aggressive chewers.

Winner !!!

This amazed us. For perspective, we're talking about a three year old white german shepherd who if he's in the mood, has and can kill a toy within minutes or oddly enough be gentle with furry balls and carry them around as if they are his babies. He's an odd duck. Anyway, since he was a pup, and to this day, he'll play and entertain himself, he'll grab a ball, throw it up in the air, then pounce on it as if it's from outer space. It's really quite cute and funny. Because of those two things I was looking for something interactive that would entertain him and confuse him....let's be honest, watching a confused dog is one of life's great pleasures. I tried two other interactive balls and they were crushed immediately. After reading a lot of reviews, people with german shepherds said this ball actually had a life span. I thought the third time could be the charm and ordered one. Well, I think it actually may be from outer space because he's obsessed with it and hasn't taken a bite out of it. He hasn't once chewed it or even teared little pieces off. The three settings are great. Sometimes he likes one better than another, then forgets about the others. I'll change it up to one he hasn't seen in a while and the whole game starts over again. He'll throw it up in the air as he does with his others, watch it and try to figure out which way it's going to go. And yes, he will pounce on it if he times it right. The size is perfect, it's heavier than your average ball but, that's what make it sturdy. I have to sneak it away when he isn't paying attention to charge it, otherwise he'll sit, stare and cry if he knows it's on the counter charging. It's a lot of fun for all of us. I'm so happy I bought it...... I say give this ball a chance even if you have a beast with killer instincts. I'm buying another for a friends 2 year old golden retriever granddog. Thank you Cheerble.

Save your Floors!
Size: Small: 24" x 24"
Great solution for pee pads that leak or when your pup isn’t all the way on (because one paw on the pad is “on the pad”) Good quality and appears to be durable. Easy to clean with a spritz of natures miracle and a paper towel or under the hose for a deeper clean. Silicone Surface kind of grips the pee pads so I haven’t needed to use the clips. It also grips the floor so it doesn’t slide around. Multiple sizes available so you can match your pee pad size. Reasonable price to save your floors!
